Research Assistant (Quant)

At Illuminology, quantitative research assistants help the firm crunch, evaluate, and proof the numbers.

They work under the direction of senior researchers to select and execute appropriate statistical analyses, to review the resulting output, and to ensure the accuracy of all the work we do. They design, conduct, and report the results from a range of quantitative data analyses, typically of survey data. Job duties may include cleaning and verifying data, selecting and performing statistical analyses (including the analysis of weighted data), writing reports of data, and proofing reports to ensure 100 percent accuracy.

A high level of attention to detail is absolutely essential, as is the ability to select and conduct appropriate statistical analyses.

We’re looking for curious, skilled researchers to support our efforts to provide high quality estimates of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and experiences. High-performers will have potential for career advancement within the firm.

Our Ideal Candidates

These fantastic people have the following experience, expertise, and personality characteristics.

  • Statistics experience. At least one year of experience conducting statistical analyses is required, including experience with various forms of regression. Prior use of the Stata software package would be excellent, but experience with SPSS, SAS, R or related (and a willingness to learn Stata) would be acceptable. Experience analyzing large data files would be excellent.
  • High attention to detail. We need researchers who can produce accurate quantitative research deliverables through all steps of the process, from cleaning and validating files to merging files together, to writing analysis syntax or scripts that have built in verifications of accuracy and producing reports using automated processes whenever possible. The successful candidate will be able to share their experience creating processes to detect all possible analytic errors and demonstrate their ability to proof their own work and the work of others with high levels of accuracy.
  • Critical thinking. Experience reviewing research results to identify what is useful and interesting is desired, as well as attention to results that might indicate a problem in data processing or analysis. Experience anticipating potential research or analytic difficulties before they occur would be helpful.
  • Clear communicator. Excellent written communication skills (emails, memos, reports) are crucial. Experience writing research reports, especially those that include quantitative analysis, would be helpful.
  • Flexible. Research assistants must be willing to work some evening or weekend hours as projects demand; we work with clients across the U.S., including the West Coast. Work hours can be scheduled around these constraints; we aim for 40 hours per week on average. We have a flexible, open workplace and offer three weeks of PTO per year as a base.
  • Educational background. A four-year degree in statistics, business, psychology, sociology, or political science (or concentrations of coursework in one of those areas) is required. Extremely qualified candidates would have a Master’s degree.
  • Team player. We’re a tight-knit group. We’re seeking those who have their own points of view but can respect others’ opinions. Those who are quick to laugh and quicker to lend a helping hand. Those who want to do something bigger than they could by themselves.
